The Madman And The Nun by Witold Witkiewics

Written in 1922 by a Polish avant-garde playwright, Madman and the Nun addresses the subjects of madness and sanity, absurdity and salvation, through the struggles of an archetypal, self-destructive poet. Seated completely in the round, the audience peered into the well of an austere amphitheater representing a cell for raving maniacs in a lunatic asylum. Immaculate white surfaces of enamel lacquer and stainless steel contrasted sharply with the nuns’ black habits and the coarse texture of plaster cast statues.
