Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus
The ancient Greek myth is the basis of Aeschylus' play about suffering and resisting tyranny. Prometheus stole fire and gave it to the human race for which he was bound to a mountain and punished by having his liver repeatedly plucked out by a long-winged eagle. The stage set represented, in an abstract way, a desolate region. The chorus inhabited a cubicle of changing colors and projections. Oceanus glided in on a tilting trapeze. Prometheus, imprisoned in an iron cage, was rolled around. At the close, as mechanical wings descended, the craggy cliff walls pivoted slowly toward each other as the lights dimmed to blackout.
