Picnic by William Inge

A late summer laziness and small town simplicity set the surface tone of Picnic, but sexual tension and a yearning for something more drive the story of Hal Carter, a drifter who returns to his home town after washing out in Hollywood. A fox in a henhouse, Hal puts the moves on his buddy Alan's fiancée, Madge. This lurid tale was played out against the porch and backyard of a life too good to be real.
