Metamorphoses by Mary Zimmerman

This adaptation of Ovid's poem on themes of change and transformation focuses on human love stories while evoking the ancient mythological world of gods and goddesses. Staged in and around an 800-gallon pool, the play's episodes used the elemental water in a variety of ways, itself undergoing constant change: laundresses' washbasin changed into King Midas' luxurious swimming pool; the roiling ocean in which Ceyx drowned became the River Styx for Orpheus' crossing; and the motionless pool of water mirroring Narcissus' beautiful reflection merged with a field of stars and constellating figures.
