Stage Design
Charles the Second by John Howard Payne and Washington Irving
Adapted from a French comedy in 1824 with Payne’s collaborator Washington Irving, Charles the Second, a fanciful lampoon of royalty and court morals, was an instant success in its time. A conventional wing, border and drop stage setting reflected a high period style with borrowings from Hogarth engravings and the watercolors of Inigo Jones.
