Cabaret by Joe Masteroff, John Kander & Fred Ebb

"Life is a cabaret" is the famous lyric of this musical; it is also the metaphor from which the play is suspended. The cabarets of Berlin's Weimar Germany were places of escape from economic depression and personal despair, places where class distinctions were blurred and taboos of religion, politics, and sexuality were shattered. For this production the entire theater was converted into the seedy spectacle of the Kit Kat Klub where the audience was welcomed and entreated to enjoy the divine decadence within the shared space even as the Nazis were gathering outside.
